Physical Therapy involves a variety of techniques including Massage, Myofascial Stripping, Trigger Point Therapy, Joint Mobilisations, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation, Muscle Energy and Neuromuscular Techniques, Orthobionomy, Spinal Realignment, Dry Needling (Medical Acupuncture) and Kinesiology Taping.
Can be used to help treat:
Back Pain, Sciatica, Herniated ("Slipped") Discs, Stress, High Blood Pressure, Muscle Strain, Frozen Shoulder, Repetitive Strain Injury, Plantar Fasciitis, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Whiplash, Tennis Elbow, Golfer's Elbow, Shin Splints and Rotator Cuff Injuries, Headaches, Bursitis, and Post-acute Phase Trauma to Muscles & Joints, as well as other conditions.
Over the last 6 years I have worked in the field of nutrition, anthropometry and soft tissue therapy. Some of my past and present clients include; Glasgow Warriors, Glasgow Rangers Football Club, Scottish Institute of Sport, Scottish Athletics, Scottish Rugby Union, St Mirren Football Club, Fijian Rugby Union and the All Blacks Rugby team (during their last 2 visits to Scotland), to name a few. I'm not quite Mo Farah, but I can run a 10km or half marathon race in a decent time.
Healthy Life Styling
Science continuously demonstrates the benefits of a healthy balanced diet.
For most people their food choices will not harm them, but some foods have lower limits, and nutritionists will teach you how to balance various foods healthily. In the developed world, a majority of life-threatening conditions are caused/exacerbated by poor diet and/or the lack of physical activity. Small lifestyle changes are sometimes enough to help prevent such conditions, or at least delay their onset.
A balance diet is important, not just for the macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins and fats) but also the micronutrients (vitamins and minerals). A high fat/sugar diet can partly be responsible for various conditions, such as: Type 2 Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, Hypertension, Obesity and Bowel Cancer. The role of a nutritionist is to teach and motivate people about good nutrition and better awareness of the possible consequences of what they eat.
Sports Nutrition Programme
Nutrition is becoming more significant in sporting performance, as an important factor in gaining the edge in a particular sport. Whether it is endurance or a power/strength sport (both put great physical demands on the body and by not meeting the energy requirements) athletes can put themselves in danger of injury, illness and decreased performance/output.
Some athletes need to "cut weight" for a competition, there are sensible or life-threatening ways for them to achieve their target. Dehydration can, on occassions, be beneficial to performance. But, it is worth noting just 2% dehydration can result in reduced cognitive performance. So, it is a fine balance. Hyponatremia (a condition where salt levels in blood are low) is usually caused by the overconsumption of water during exercise. It can be life-threatening and demonstrates the importance of a proper hydration strategy for sporting performance.
ISAK Body Composition Measuring
ISAK stands for the "International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry." The society was founded in Glasgow back in 1986.
ISAK trained anthropometrists use a standardised method for measuring body composition. This method can be compared on an individual, and a global basis.
Measurements taken include; 8 skinfold sites around the body, body mass, stature, waist, hips, muscle girths and bone breadths. From these measurements somatotype (body type) can be determined, and the sum of skinfolds calculated. It is possible to estimate the "% body fat" from these measurements, but the accuracy is debatable. You should be aware that the equations used to estimate "% body fat" may not match your bone density and skin thickness. Using sum of skinfolds gives a more personalised profile and makes it easier to identify areas on the body where you lose/gain weight more easily. Since measurements are specific to you, the results are more meaningful than "% body fat".
The techniques used will depend on the area and condition being treated, to relieve pain, enhance range of movement of joints, restore balance (if appropriate), improve muscle function, and can help decrease the risk of future injury.
Massage Therapy uses the 4 fundamental strokes – Effleurage, Friction, Petrissage and Tapotement. The way these strokes are applied, and the depth of pressure, are the basis of the following therapies: Classic Massage, Swedish Massage, Sports Massage, Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial Release or Medical Massage. At Bene Fit Therapies you will receive a tailored massage to your requirements. If you think of Physical Therapy as a repair service, then Massage Therapy is your regular service.
Who is Massage for:
Only people with a systemic, inflammatory condition should avoid massage, for everyone else there will be a massage that is right for them. For some their massage preference is light pressure, using lots of slow effleurage and petrissage, whilst others might choose the application of deep pressure with lots of friction and tapotment. There are many options.
